Science in brief - Why HEALTHY fat does not make you fat

We’ve all been told for so long to reduce the amount of fat in our diets as eating fat is making us fatter and fatter. We are literally now brain washed to believe that fat is bad. It’s hard to change our way of thinking.

But, really, fat is not the enemy. Sugar and too many - particularly processed - carbohydrates are.

In simplistic terms - let’s look at the science behind what fat, sugar and carbohydrates do to your body.

The Science

Fact NO 1 - The only thing that increases fat storage in your body is the hormone of insulin. That is one of the key roles of insulin - to take glucose out of the blood and put it into the fat cells.

Fact NO 2 - The only macro nutrients that cause the insulin response in your body to be triggered are sugar, carbohydrates (that turn to sugar when they hit your body) and … to a lesser extent … protein.

High blood sugar levels are toxic to our body and so, when we eat too much sugar (or carbohydrates), our pancreas releases insulin to reduce the sugar level in our blood. The insulin facilitates the transfer of that sugar into our fat cells to be called upon when food is short in the future.

Fact NO 3 - Fat does not trigger the insulin response.

Fact NO 4 - Therefore eating HEALTHY fats does not make you fat.

Too much fat, or the very unhealthy kinds of fat, can stop you from losing weight, but that’s a subject for another time.

To reiterate that point again - eating fat does not trigger the insulin response therefore it does not make you gain fat. Quite the contrary actually, eating healthy fat actually raises your metabolism which encourages your body to burn any excess fat that you may have taken in.

Healthy vs Unhealthy Fats

When I refer to fats here I am referring ONLY to healthy, natural fats. Fats such as Avocados, coconut’s, nuts, seeds, olive oil, eggs and small oily fish.

I’m NOT referring to the processed, unhealthy fats such as vegetable oils including canola oil, conventional (non-organic) dairy that is laden with hormones, fats found in processed foods, deep fried food and margarine. The unhealthy fats will inflame your system and will lead to ill health in general.

See How It Makes You Feel

So I challenge you to try this out for yourself and see if eating less sugar (and carbohydrates) and eating more delicious, healthy fats gives you any of these really common benefits:

  • Fat keeps you feeling fuller for longer than carbohydrates (try eggs, avocado and a green vegetable for breakfast rather than a muffin, cereal or toast and see how it makes you feel)

  • Fat gives you more energy than carbohydrates. Fat is a crucial component of every cell in your body. The cells outer membrane needs fat to make it strong – without enough fat in your diet your energy will fade because every cell in your body will become weaker

  • Fat assists in the absorption of vitamins. Many vitamins are fat soluble so, without enough fat, those vitamins you’re eating in your salad … or in your multi vitamin … may not be absorbed as well as they would do by eating some fat at the same time (add avocado, nuts or olive oil to your salad)

  • Eating more good quality fat can help you to get pregnant. Fats are the building blocks of all of our hormones … read this line again if you’re hoping for a baby … the correct hormones rising and falling each month is a large part of the conception process. Not only during conception, the correct signalling of all hormones is imperative to keep that baby healthy and secure until its ready to be born.

  • Your brain is 60% fat so, by eating more fat, your brain will literally function better. You will be able to feel it – you’ll think more clearly and have more energy

  • More good quality fats in your diet and less sugar helps you to sleep better. Carbohydrates cause the rising and falling of blood sugar. This can often be a factor in waking up in the middle of the night. As fats do not cause this same effect they help support much better, more consistent sleep.

  • Healthy fats are calming to your central nervous system so you will literally feel calmer, less anxious and less stressed when you feed your body with good quality fats

   It’s true. Don’t take my word for it. Try it out for yourself.
